AMED DAY TRIPS
Learn about the jewels of Amed Sea
A bit of history
The story of this Japanese Wreck remains quite mysterious given that not much information has been found on this ship. What we have been able to identify about this shipwreck is that it must be a Japanese patrol ship that have been sunk during the WWII next to the small village of Banyuning in the Amed area. It has been acknowledged as a ship from the Japanese navy according to its design and, as funny as it can be, also because of its toilet onboard that appeared to be in perfect conditions, a sign of excellent maintenance associated to the Japanese savoir faire. The 20 meters long ship ended underwater at only few meters from the beach, it is easy to access from the shore and located at a depth ranged between 2 and 12 meters.
THE JAPANESE WRECK
A wreck full of life
As you can imagine, after all these years spent at the bottom of the sea, this shipwreck has been colonized with abundant marine life. The whole Japanese wreck is now covered of colorful corals and became the home for tiny critters. You will be able to see some large Gorgonian fans, sponges, hard and soft corals and other rare species such as Leaf Scorpion fishes, Ghost Pipefishes and some smaller fishes…
An easy-going experience
The shipwreck is accessible directly from the shore, after a short swim at the surface, you will reach the wreck. It is up to you to decide how deep you wish to do the exploration given that the shipwreck is laying on its side and is partially broken, it is possible to access it from different angles and depths. In overall, the wreck is very easy and safe dive. Just after your visit of the ship, you can follow the descending slope to arrive at a nice coral plateau.

WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER DIVE SITES IN THE AREA?
Pyramids
More than 20 years ago locals dropped concrete pyramids and tires to attract fish and creatures and create a new reef. Mission accomplished! This dive site has to be done when you come to Amed, take your time to look inside those structures, it's a perfect place for Moray eels, Lionfish, shrimps and Leaf Scorpion fish. The dive site is full of colors and you might see turtles.
Ghost Bay
This site is excellent for macro in the sand, very little rocks and corals. We look in the sand, in the anemones and even in the old ropes or other debris that shelters small creatures. We will not forget to hang around the artificial reef at 5-7 meters deep on the sand plateau, where you can find many Stone fish, Ghost Pipefish, Lionfish, and Leaf Scorpion fish. It is the perfect place to admire the tiny crowded marine life.
Gili Selang Bay
Also called Waterloo, this site is reserved to experienced divers. Located at the entry of the Lombok straight, the site offers an exceptional coral reef, the marine life here is very different from the one in the areas of Amed and Tulamben but similar to the one you will encounter around Nusa Penida. The site is made of a little bay, the island of Gili Selang closing it and forming the most oriental point of Bali.
