Highly Intelligent Species

Mantas have proven to be one of the world most intelligent species. Their high cognitive functions are often compared to their cousins’ dolphins but also to elephants and primates. They are part of the small circle that regroups the cleverest animals of all. This exceptional categorisation comes from their abilities to understand their own beings, they can recognise themselves in a mirror and can also easily draw mental maps of their environment through the identification of smells and visuals. This indicates a highly developed long-term memory. It is a special ability in comparison to other cold-blooded fishes that have, on the opposite, short term memories.

WHAT ABOUT MANTA RAYS?

Special Offer

Habitat

This creature is living in tropical ocean waters around the globe. They spend most of their time in the deep but regularly visit cleaning stations. They often visit the same cleaning station over and over and create a routine. By coming to these cleaning stations, the objective is to be cleaned by smaller creatures who come to remove parasites and dead skin. For us, as divers, this ritual is the best occasion to get to meet this incredible sea animals.

Feeding

Manta Rays are filtered feeders which means that they swim with mouth wide open to catch zooplankton and krill. They also use their own hunting technic of following each other in a circle to create a cyclone effect and trap their food in spiral… This is the main reason for which they live in group. As they appear to be organized and also to go hunt deep below the surface, they are considered as predators.

Reproduction

The reproduction of Manta Rays is considered as quite slow. Female give birth once every couple of years after 12 to 13 months of pregnancy. Babies can immediately survive without parental care and their life expectancy is around 50 years.
