TULAMBEN DAY TRIPS
Learn about Tulamben underwater world
A bit of history
The USAT Liberty is a cargo ship of 120 meters long requisitioned by the American army during World War II. This ship was, then, armed with two canons: a big caliber at the bow and a little caliber at the stern. During its last voyage, the ship was hit by two torpedoes from a Japanese submarine on the 11th of June 1942, whilst it was traversing the Lombok straight. The crew did their best to draw it to Singaraja but taking in too much water, the ship got stranded on the Tulamben beach. The Liberty stayed on the beach from 1942 to 1963, until an earthquake made the wreck slip towards the ocean at less than 40 meters from the shore. Since more than 50 years, Bali and the Liberty wreck are known across the world. This wreck is one of the most renown wrecks for diving.

Metamorphose of the wreck in ideal habitat
According to its time spent on the beach, the ship has been hit by waves during more than 20 years and the paint has freed itself and made of the hull the ideal opportunity for abundant colonization of corals and seaweed. It makes this wreck unique for its formation of life. It is, now, lying between 5 and 28 meters deep. It is easy to access from the shore and there is life everywhere on the wreck. You will see hump head parrot fish, schools of trevally, leaf scorpion fish, pygmy’s sea horses, giant barracuda, frog fish, groupers, jack fish, angel fish, black tip and white tip sharks…

It is literally the beginning of the hunt. You will see the chase between animals of different sizes, all looking for their favourite meal. It is wonderful to see how active the wildlife is at night; it is an unforgettable experience!
